Main House

Brick, symmetrical and arranged around a three-story octagonal gallery. Formal rooms, a wormy chestnut study, and a Carolina room opening onto the verandah.

More about Main House

The house was built in 2000 to a design by the architect Michael Kersting, and constructed by Lee Cowper for the present owner. It is brick and symmetrical, and it is organized around an octagonal gallery that rises three stories from the main floor to a cupola — a deliberate counterpoint to the order of the plan around it.

The main floor holds formal living and dining rooms, gallery walls lit for hanging pictures, a conservatory, and a study clad in reclaimed wormy chestnut. The kitchen is fitted with a Viking gas range and warming drawer, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, a Thermador oven and Fisher & Paykel dish drawers, and opens into a Carolina room with a fireplace and a wet bar. That room and the living room both give onto a deep verandah.

High ceilings, hardwood floors with inlaid borders, paneling, custom cabinetry, three fireplaces and a central sound system run through the level.

Upstairs is quieter. Twin principal suites each have a fireplace and open onto the verandah, where the view carries over the sound to the ocean. A further bedroom, an office and more gallery space share the floor, each room with its own bath, custom woodwork and wool carpet. Above them the third floor is a single gallery, and a spiral stair climbs from it to the cupola and its views in every direction.

The ground floor is the informal one: a den with exposed beams and a fireplace, anchored by an antique pub bar, and a guest room with its own fireplace and bath. A patio runs the length of the house. The laundry doubles as a prep kitchen and sits beside the elevator, which serves three floors. Beyond it are climate-controlled garaging and a workshop.

Behind all of it: a whole-house generator, hurricane shutters, storm-rated windows and doors, Brazilian mahogany decking on the verandahs, solid cherry cabinetry, a Lutron lighting system, a security system, and a metal roof.
